We are currently seeking an experienced K-9 Trainer for our new Alabama location.
Under the direction of the Alabama Ranch Manager.
and the Training Director, you will conduct behavioral assessments on all new dogs entering the rescue to ensure the rescue's overall well-being and successful adoption.
Joining Big Dog Rescue as a Dog Trainer provides an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of dogs in need, contribute to successful adoptions, and promote responsible pet ownership.
Duties and Responsibilities Assessing new dogs upon their arrival evaluating the behavior, temperament, and training needs.
Determine the dogs suitability for adoption and develop individualized training plans.
Conduct dog-to-dog meet and greets for potential adopters.
Facilitate controlled introductions between resident dogs and potential adopters' dog(s).
Train and educate the rescue staff on proper leash walking techniques, positive reinforcement training methods, and effective handing of dogs.
Provide hands-on training support to dogs with behavioral issues, fear, or anxiety.
Utilize positive reinforcement methods to modify behavior and improve their adoptability.
Work closely with the Training Director to develop and implement training programs, behavior modification plans, and enrichment activities for dogs.
Collaborate with the Ranch Manager to identify dogs requiring special attention or intervention due to behavioral issues or medical concerns.
Report any significant changes in behavior or health to the appropriate personnel.
Perform any other duties as assigned by supervisor or management Transport dogs as required Requirements and Qualifications High School Diploma or equivalent A minimum of 3 years of professional experience in dog training and behavior modification, preferably in a rescue or shelter environment A strong understanding of dog behavior, body language, and canine communication.
Familiarity with positive reinforcement training methods and behavior modification techniques.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively collaborate with staff, volunteers, and potential adopters.
Ability to provide clear instructions and guidance.
Ability to work with dogs of various backgrounds, including those with behavioral challenges or past traumas.
Demonstrated patience, empathy, and a compassionate approach to animal welfare.
The position my require handling large and energetic dogs.
physical fitness and stamina are necessary to handle dogs of different sizes and strengths.
Willingness to work weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings as needed.
Must be available during peak adoption periods and special events.
Valid drivers license required.
